The Planes of Fame Air Museum, one of the oldest, largest and finest aviation museums in the world is set to hold their annual air show over the weekend of May 4th/5th at their base in Chino, California. The event will feature fifty or so historic aircraft, a number of which will come from their own collection, not to mention modern military hardware as well. The theme for this year’s event will in part be to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings and include a display by the paratrooper re-enactors from the WWII Airborne Demo Team.
Some of the vintage military types expected to fly at the show will feature the P-47 Thunderbolt and P-38 Lightning along with a number of P-51 Mustangs, including the world’s fastest piston-engined aircraft, the P-51D known as Voodoo! The museum’s uniquely airworthy Northrop N9M Flying Wing will also be flying at the event as well. There will be demonstration flights concentrating on elements of WWII, such as the Pacific and European Theaters of Operations, on the Korean and Vietnam Wars as well. Greg ‘Wired’ Colyer will put on an aerobatics display in his Lockheed T-33, while Eric Tucker will demonstrate the unique handling characteristics of the Piper Cub, while Rob Harrison will thrill the crowds with his dynamic performance in the Tumbling Bear.
The U.S. Air Force F-16 Viper Demo team will also be on hand to roar through the sky, and of course, a U.S. Air Force Heritage Flight will take place with some of the F-16’s predecessors in military service.
For families with young children, kids 11 and under will get in free. There will also be a Kids Zone for the younger ones perhaps less focused on flying machines. There will of course be plenty of food available for purchase and other types of vendors on hand as well.
In addition to many other fantastic airplanes that will be performing and on static display, there will be a special panel discussion with veterans. To get the schedule or for last minute updates, please do follow the Planes of Fame Air Show Facebook page to make sure you have all the details you need.
