As most WarbirdsNews readers will well know, the Warbirds Over Wanaka biennial air show in Wanaka, New Zealand is one of the world’s spectacular aviation events. Nestled at the foot of the Southern Alps and Crown mountain ranges and beside Lake Wanaka, the back drop for the air show is as magnificent as one could imagine. Visitors to the show come from all over the world to take in the sights and sounds, and each event only adds to the legend. Next year, the show will be adding something else which, while not strictly aviation-related, is bound to add to the allure for many in the regular audience. Wanaka: The Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow next year will be celebrating 100 years of trucking and is inviting truck owners from all over New Zealand to register.

The ‘Warbirds and Wheels Century of Trucking’ display will be one of the feature ground exhibits at the 2016 airshow being held on March 25th, 26th and 27th at Wanaka Airport.

“Warbirds Over Wanaka has a fine tradition of not just celebrating great aircraft but also other forms of motorised vehicles and we’re very excited to be focussing on trucks for 2016,” says WOW Event Manager, Mandy Deans.

“Several air shows ago we had an amazing display of Fords which proved a big hit with our visitors. This time round we’re hoping to have up to 50 vehicles of all shapes and sizes from 1916 to the most modern trucks. Truck owners will need to register because we want to ensure we get a good representation of different trucks from various decades over the hundred years,” says Mandy.

The Warbirds and Wheels visitor attraction at Wanaka Airport has come onboard as naming sponsor of the truck display. General Manager, Naomi Lindsay says it’s a natural fit for them.

“The ‘Warbirds and Wheels Century of Trucking’ will complement what we already display in our visitor attraction. Our line-up of over 30 classic cars and trucks is world class. We expect many airshow visitors to check out both the trucks and our car and aircraft displays while they’re here,” says Naomi.

Naomi says over the past few years a number of Truck Rallies have stopped off at Warbirds and Wheels to check out the displays and having lots of trucks lined up right next door is a very impressive sight.

‘Look out for special appearances from some great trucks and some “trucker” specials in our award-winning diner to get into the spirit of trucking,” said Naomi.
