The Hangar 11 Collection of the United Kingdom has recently reported that they are fast approaching the point where their Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawk G-KITT will be ready for a transit flight to receive her new paint scheme. The plane had been repainted, one coat over the other four times over the last several decades and the volunteer crew painstakingly removed all traces of old paint inch by inch over the winter in preparation of her receiving her new livery.

Also included in this most recent renovation, the control sufaces have all been re-covered, primed and are set to be re-fitted and balanced. The carburetor was sent to California for a rebuild and has been reinstalled, necessitating ground runs which went off without a hitch. An original dashboard top section was located in Australia and has been installed and the canopy has been refitted. After painting the interior surfaces of removed panels, the crew from Hangar 11 is closing up the fuselage and completing minor odds and ends that need attention prior to her flight to the paint shop.

Hanger 11 is keeping mum about what the plane’s new paint scheme will be, hoping to keep it under wraps until her first post-renovation air show, the South East Airshow at Manston International Airport in June, though it’s unlikely the secret will be kept until then given the widespread interest in the aircraft and the efforts of the UK’s large plane-spotting community.
